Hurricane Irma: 5.6Million People Ordered To Leave Florida In America's Biggest Ever Evacuation

The most powerful Atlantic storm ever has strengthened back to a Category 5, having already laid waste to the Caribbean, where it left at least 22 people dead.

A record 5.6million people have been ordered to evacuate Florida as Hurricane Irma approaches.

The largest evacuation in US history is taking place as Irma gathered strength once again to become a Category 5 storm.

It is packing sustained winds of 160mph and a storm surge of up to 12ft is expected. The death toll currently stands at 27 lives lost after Irma tore through the Caribbean including several British Overseas Territories.

Images of the devastation gave greater urgency to warnings with the National Weather Service stating simply: "This is as real as it gets - nowhere will be safe."
