British Interior Minister Rudd Resigns After Immigration Scandal

Britain’s interior minister resigned on Sunday after Prime Minister Theresa May’s government faced an outpouring of indignation over its treatment of some long-term Caribbean residents who were wrongly labeled illegal immigrants.

The resignation of one of May’s closest allies is a blow as she navigates the final year of negotiations ahead of Britain’s exit from the European Union in March 2019. It also deprives the cabinet of one of its most outspoken pro-European members.

In a resignation letter to May, Amber Rudd said she had inadvertently misled a parliamentary committee last Wednesday by denying the government had targets for the deportation of illegal migrants. May accepted her resignation.

For two weeks, British ministers have been struggling to explain why some descendants of the so-called “Windrush generation”, invited to Britain to plug labor shortfalls between 1948 and 1971, had been denied basic rights.

The Windrush scandal overshadowed the Commonwealth summit in London and has raised questions about May’s six-year stint as interior minister before she became prime minister in the wake of the 2016 Brexit referendum.

“The Windrush scandal has rightly shone a light on an important issue for our country,” Rudd said in a resignation letter to May.

Rudd, who was appointed Home Secretary in 2016, said voters wanted those who had the right to reside in Britain to be treated fairly and humanely but also that illegal immigrants be removed.

The opposition Labour Party, which had repeatedly called on Rudd to resign, said May was responsible and should explain her own role in the government’s immigration policies.

“The architect of this crisis, Theresa May, must now step forward to give an immediate, full and honest account of how this inexcusable situation happened on her watch,” said Diane Abbott, Labour’s spokeswoman on interior affairs.

Abbott called on May to give a statement to the House of Commons explaining whether she knew that Rudd was misleading parliament about the deportation targets.

Facing questions over the Windrush scandal, Rudd, 54, told lawmakers on Wednesday that Britain did not have targets for the removal of immigrants, but was forced to clarify her words after leaked documents showed some targets did exist.

The Guardian newspaper on Sunday reported a letter from Rudd to May last year in which she stated an “ambitious but deliverable” aim for an increase in the enforced deportation of immigrants.

After repeated challenges to her testimony on the deportation of immigrants, Rudd telephoned May on Sunday and offered her resignation.

“I feel it is necessary to do so because I inadvertently misled the Home Affairs Select Committee over targets for removal of illegal immigrants,” Rudd told May.

A replacement is not likely to be announced overnight.

WINDRUSH CRISIS
The government has apologized for the fiasco, promised citizenship and compensation to those affected, including to people who have lost their jobs, been threatened with deportation and denied benefits because of the errors.

But the controversy over policies which May is closely associated with has raised awkward questions about how the pursuit of lower immigration after Brexit sits alongside the desire to be an outward-looking global economy.

The immigrants are named after the Empire Windrush, one of the first ships to bring Caribbean migrants to Britain in 1948, when Commonwealth citizens were invited to fill labor shortages and help rebuild the economy after World War Two.

Almost half a million people left their homes in the West Indies to live in Britain between 1948 and 1970, according to Britain’s National Archives.

A week before local elections, May apologized to the black community on Thursday in a letter to The Voice, Britain’s national Afro-Caribbean newspaper.

“We have let you down and I am deeply sorry,” she said. “But apologies alone are not good enough. We must urgently right this historic wrong.”

The crisis has focused attention on May, who as interior minister set out to create a “really hostile environment” for illegal immigrants, imposing tough new requirements in 2012 for people to prove their legal status.

Rudd’s resignation comes four months after another close ally and her then most senior minister, Damian Green, was forced out of his job for lying about whether he knew pornography had been found on computers in his parliamentary office.

Anna Soubry, a Conservative lawmaker, predicted Rudd may one day return to a senior job in government.

“She is a woman of great courage & immense ability,” Soubry said. “If there is any justice she will soon return to the highest of office.”

British Professor Arrested In Iran On 'Security Charges'

Judiciary spokesman Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejehi told reporters in Tehran that Abbas Edalat, a professor who works at London’s Imperial College has been arrested on “security charges”.

Abbas Edalat, a computer scientist and mathematician at Imperial College London, was reportedly held earlier this month by the Revolutionary Guard.Judiciary spokesman Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejehi was quoted by Iran's official IRNA news agency as saying Mr Edalat had been arrested on "security charges", without elaborating.

Judiciary spokesman Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejehi told reporters in Tehran: “I confirm his arrest on security charges, but I am unable to give details,” according to state broadcaster IRIB.

The semi-official Fars news agency reported earlier this week that Mr Edalat was among several people arrested by the Revolutionary Guard over accusations of being a member of a "network affiliated with Britain". Mr Edalat, who has campaigned against Western military action targeting Iran, travelled there from his home in England on an unknown date to attend an academic workshop, according to the Centre for Human Rights in Iran.

A Foreign Office spokesperson said: "We are urgently seeking information from the Iranian authorities following reports of the arrest of a British-Iranian dual national."

The arrest of Mr Edalat follows the detention of another dual national, Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe, in 2016.

Mrs Zaghari-Ratcliffe is serving a five-year jail term after being convicted of spying, which she has always denied. Her husband, Richard Ratcliffe, has criticised the Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson's unsuccessful bids to have her released.

Bill Cosby Found Guilty Of Sexual Assault In Retrial

80-year-old, Bill Cosby, who once embodied the idealized American father on a wildly popular sitcom, was convicted of sexual assault on Thursday in a high-stakes retrial after a half-dozen women testified that the famed comedian drugged and assaulted them.

The jury found Cosby, guilty on all three counts of aggravated indecent assault for drugging and sexually assaulting Andrea Constand at his home in a Philadelphia suburb in 2004.

The verdict was one of the first major courtroom victories for the #MeToo movement, which has exposed sexual harassment and misconduct in entertainment, media, politics and beyond.

The first trial ended with a hung jury after six days of deliberations last summer. When the jury announced its decision Thursday, Mr. Cosby sat back in his chair and quietly stared down. Several women who have accused him of abuse, and attended the trial each day, briefly cheered. Ms. Constand, who had been quiet throughout, stood up and was hugged by supporters, including her lawyer.

“I was kind of jolted awake and felt Mr. Cosby on the couch beside me, behind me, and my vagina was being penetrated quite forcefully, and I felt my breast being touched,” Ms. Constand said. “I was limp, and I could not fight him off.”

Cosby faces a maximum sentence of 10 years and a fine of up to $25,000 on each count. He remains free on bail until sentencing. But he is unlikely to spend much time in jail.

O'Neill said that because of Cosby's age and his medical condition — his eyesight is poor — "I am not going to simply lock him up." Cosby has to surrender his passport and must remain in his nearby home, the judge said.

Mr. Steele, the district attorney, also worked to rebut the defense claims. He said that Mr. Cosby, a member of Temple University’s board of directors at the time and the university’s most famous alumnus, set his sights on Ms. Constand, an employee in the athletic department who considered him a mentor.

“This case is about trust,” Mr. Steele had told the jurors. “This case is about betrayal, and that betrayal leading to a sexual assault of a woman named Andrea Constand.”

Police Arrest Man, 70, For Defiling 13-Year-Old Girl

The Ogun State Police Command has arrested a 70-year-old man, Adefuye Teslim, for allegedly defiling a 13-year-old girl at the Parapete area of Ago Iwoye on Sunday, April, 22, 2018.

The suspect, our correspondent gathered, was arrested following a complaint to the police from the mother of the victim, Mariam Kareem, that her teenage daughter was lured into an apartment by the suspect where he violated her.

She added that the suspect warned her daughter not to reveal the act to anyone.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Oyeyemi, however, said the victim, who was feeling pain in her private parts, later informed her mother, who then reported the case to the police at the Ago-Iwoye division.

He said based on the complaint, the Divisional Police Officer, Ade Adedoyin, led detectives to the scene and arrested the suspect.

Oyeyemi said the victim was taken to the General Hospital, Ago Iwoye, for medical examination and the result confirmed that she had been sexually abused.

Meanwhile, the state Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Iliyasu, has ordered that the case be transferred to the Anti-Human Trafficking and Child Labour Unit of the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, Abeokuta, for investigation and prosecution of the suspect.

It will be recalled that another 29-year-old man, Soji Ogunrinola, popularly known as Bulldozer, was arrested over the weekend  for allegedly defiling another 13- year-old girl.

That incident occurred at Ogiri Ojule village, in the Odeda Local Government Area of the state.

Facebook's Rise In Profits, Users Shows Resilience After Scandals

Facebook Inc (FB.O) shares rose on Wednesday after the social network reported a surprisingly strong 63 percent rise in profit and an increase in users, with no sign that business was hurt by a scandal over the mishandling of personal data.

After easily beating Wall Street expectations, shares traded up 7.1 percent after the bell at $171, paring a month-long decline that began with Facebook’s disclosure in March that consultancy Cambridge Analytica had harvested data belonging to millions of users.

The Cambridge Analytica scandal, affecting up to 87 million users and prompting several apologies from Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg, generated calls for regulation and for users to leave the social network, but there was no indication advertisers immediately changed their spending.

“Everybody keeps talking about how bad things are for Facebook, but this earnings report to me is very positive, and reiterates that Facebook is fine, and they’ll get through this,” said Daniel Morgan, senior portfolio manager at Synovus Trust Company. His firm holds about 73,000 shares in Facebook.

Facebook’s quarterly profit beat analysts’ estimates, as a 49 percent jump in quarterly revenue outpaced a 39 percent rise in expenses from a year earlier. The mobile ad business grew on a push to add more video content.

Facebook said monthly active users in the first quarter rose to 2.2 billion, up 13 percent from a year earlier and matching expectations, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

The company reversed last quarter’s decline in the number of daily active users in the United States and Canada, saying it had 185 million users there, up from 184 million in the fourth quarter.

The results are a bright spot for the world’s largest social network amid months of negative headlines about the company’s handling of personal information, its role in elections and its fueling of violence in developing countries.

Facebook, which generates revenue primarily by selling advertising personalized to its users, has demonstrated for several quarters how resilient its business model can be as long as users keep coming back to scroll through its News Feed and watch its videos.

It is spending to ensure users are not scared away by scandals. Chief Financial Officer David Wehner told analysts on a call that expenses this year would grow between 50 percent and 60 percent, up from a prior range of 45 percent to 60 percent.

Much of Facebook’s ramp-up in spending is for safety and security, Wehner said. The category includes efforts to root out fake accounts, scrub hate speech and take down violent videos.

Facebook said it ended the first quarter with 27,742 employees, up 48 percent from a year earlier.

“So long as profits continue to grow at a rapid rate, investors will accept that higher spending to ensure privacy is warranted,” Wedbush Securities analyst Michael Pachter said.

It has been nearly two years since Facebook shares rose 7 percent or more during a trading day. They rose 7.2 percent on April 28, 2016, the day after another first-quarter earnings report.

Net income attributable to Facebook shareholders rose in the first quarter to $4.99 billion, or $1.69 per share, from $3.06 billion, or $1.04 per share, a year earlier.

Analysts on average were expecting a profit of $1.35 per share, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

The company declined to provide some details sought by analysts. It has not shared the revenue generated by Instagram, the photo-sharing app it owns, and it declined to provide details about time spent on Facebook. Facebook also owns the popular smartphone apps Messenger and WhatsApp.

Tighter regulation could make Facebook’s ads less lucrative by reducing the kinds of data it can use to personalize and target ads to users, although Facebook’s size means it could also be well positioned to cope with regulations.

Facebook and Alphabet Inc’s (GOOGL.O) Google together dominate the internet ad business worldwide. Facebook is expected to take 18 percent of global digital ad revenue this year, compared with Google’s 31 percent, according to research firm eMarketer.

The company said it was increasing the amount of money authorized to repurchase shares by an additional $9 billion. It had initially authorized repurchases up to $6 billion.

Facebook shares closed at $185.09 on March 16, the day that the Cambridge Analytica scandal broke after the bell on a Friday. In the days immediately afterward, the company lost more than $50 billion in market value.

The Cambridge Analytica scandal, which has sparked government investigations globally, was mentioned only once on an hour-long conference call between analysts and Facebook management, when one analyst asked Zuckerberg what he learned from testifying in U.S. congressional hearings.

Zuckerberg said the two days of hearings this month were “an important moment for the company to hear the feedback, and to show what we’re doing.”

Angola Sacks Army Boss

Gen. Geraldo Sachipengo Nunda, the 66-year-old Chief of Army Staff of Angola has been sacked and replaced with Gen. AntĂłnio EgĂdio de Sousa Santos.

Nunda, who was appointed in 2009, was sacked on Monday by Angolan President João Lourenço.

Lourenco is reported to have sacked his army forces’ chief of staff over corruption allegations in a deepening purge of senior figures linked with graft.

Last year, Gen Nunda said he was ready for retirement.

The Presidency statement further confirmed other 39 dismissals and appointments.

Lourenço, though was handpicked by his predecessor Jose Eduardo dos Santos, he has increasing ly asserted his authority.

He sacked his predecessor’s son, JosĂ© Filomeno dos Santos, as the country’s head of the strategic $5 billion sovereign fund and replaced him with Mr Carlos Alberto Lopes, a former Finance minister.

The former Angolan president appointed his eldest son as president of Fundo Soberano de Angola in 2013, soon after its creation in October 2012.

President Lourenço also sacked Isabel dos Santos, the former president’s eldest daughter, as the chair of the board of the state-owned oil firm Sonangol. He replaced her with Mr Carlos Saturnino, an oil industry veteran.

Several other dos Santos kin and allies have been replaced from key government institutions, in moves seen as wrestling control from the man who ruled Angola for 38 years.

Ex-U.S. President Bush Hospitalised

Just days after burying his wife Barbara, who died at age 92, former President George H.W. Bush has been hospitalised after an infection he contracted spread to his blood.

Spokesman to the former president said on Monday that Bush was admitted to the hospital on Sunday.

“President Bush was admitted to Houston Methodist Hospital Sunday after contracting an infection that spread to his blood.

“He is responding to treatments and appears to be recovering. We will issue additional updates as events warrant,” Bush spokesman Jim McGrath said in a statement.

Bush, 93, was hospitalised last April for two weeks due to a “mild case of pneumonia.” Earlier in 2017 he was hospitalized for 16 days, also to be treated for pneumonia.

He was temporarily placed on a ventilator and was treated in the intensive care unit.

His wife was also hospitalised around the same time to treat a case of bronchitis.

He also was hospitalised in 2015 in Maine after falling at home and breaking a bone in his neck, and in December 2014 for about a week for shortness of breath.

Bush spent Christmas 2012 in intensive care for a bronchitis-related cough and other issues.

Barbara died Tuesday, shortly after her family announced she was in failing health and would decline further medical treatment in favor of “comfort care.” There were no details of her specific health problems.

Bush was “broken-hearted” over the loss of his “beloved Barbara” and was said to have held her hand all day. He was “at her side” when she passed away, his chief of staff said.

The 41st president uses a wheelchair and an electric scooter for mobility after developing a form of Parkinson’s disease, and he has needed hospital treatment several times in recent years for respiratory problems.

Bush served as president from 1989 to 1993 and as vice president under Ronald Reagan from 1981 to 1989. He also served as a congressman and as director of the CIA.

Champions League: Liverpool vs. Roma

English Premier League team, Liverpool set to face Roma today in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final.

The Reds haven't graced this stage for a decade, but earned their place here with a comprehensive dismantling of Manchester City over two lopsided legs.

Salah scored 34 goals in 83 appearances for the Serie A club before joining Liverpool last summer in a £34m deal.

Today's game will be the first time he will face his former colleagues.

"Mo [Salah] had a fantastic time at Roma, but he will realise pretty quickly that they are no longer his team-mates. We both have the chance to go to the final and that's all I need. It's possible – let's try everything to do it. For Roma, it's a special thing to be in a semi-final, as it is for us. These are very special moments, and if you can't enjoy them there's something wrong with you", Liverpool manager, JĂŒrgen Klopp says.

West Brom exposed Liverpool with two goals from set-pieces in the 2-2 Premier League draw at the weekend and the defence looked susceptible from crosses. However, the caveat to that was it was against a previously-untested back four with Alberto Moreno, Ragnar Klavan and Joe Gomez all bit-part players recently, who will not start today.

According to Eusebio Di Francesco, Roma coach, "Anfield is incredible. The beauty of English stadiums is amazing. In Italy we're not used to having the fans behind us in this way. Liverpool will have the fans on their side, but our away fans will support us. We need to play as a team more than ever. Liverpool are different to Barcelona in terms of pace and we need to play well to win. We want to make the most of Liverpool's possible weaknesses."

Possible line-ups

Liverpool: Karius; Alexander-Arnold, Lovren, Van Dijk, Robertson; Oxlade-Chamberlain, Henderson, Milner; Salah, Firmino, Mané
Out: Lallana (hamstring), Matip (thigh), Can (back)

Roma: Alisson Becker; Florenzi, Manolas, Fazio, Kolarov; De Rossi, Strootman, Nainggolan; Perotti, DĆŸeko, Ünder
Out: Karsdorp (knee), Defrel (knee)

Don’t Retire, Jose Mourinho Tells Arsene Wenger

Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho has told Arsene Wenger not to retire from management after the Frenchman announced his decision to step down from Arsenal.

Arsenal sent shockwaves through English football this morning when the Gunners released a brief statement announcing that Wenger was to leave the club after 22 years at the end of the season.

Mourinho and Wenger have clashed on a number of occasions since the Portuguese moved to England in 2004 and the Frenchman’s beaten the self-proclaimed Special One just once in competitive matches in the last 14 years.

However, Mourinho praised Wenger for his work at Arsenal and said he hopes the Frenchman continues management elsewhere.

“If he’s happy i’m happy. If he’s sad, I’m sad,” said Mourinho.

“I always wish the best for my opponents. I always wish the best so that’s the point – if he’s happy with the decision he made, if he looks forward to the next chapter of his career then i’m happy for him.

“I know what it means to win three Premier League titles and seven FA Cups but not just that. What he did in Japan, France, to the French national team, what he gave to Arsenal even without a period of Premier League titles, the transition from the [old] stadium. ‘Everything he did we know. If he’s happy with the decision I’m really happy. I hope he doesn’t retire from football.”

Wenger steps down from Arsenal having won 10 trophies in 21 seasons at the club, including three Premier League titles and seven FA Cups. The Gunners take on Manchester United at Old Trafford on the 29th April but their focus will be on the semi-finals of the Europa League with both legs sandwiched between their trip to Old Trafford.

The Red Devils take on Tottenham in the semi-finals of the FA Cup at Wembley on Saturday and Mourinho’s believes Spurs do not have an advantage in that the game will be played in north-west London.

Two Boko Haram Commanders Surrendered To Nigerian Army

Maj.-Gen. Rogers Nicholas, the Theatre Commander, Operation Lafiya Dole, said two Boko Haram commanders and the insurgents’ physician have surrendered to Nigerian Army.

He made the disclosure when he presented the surrendered insurgents in Maiduguri.

Nicholas said a woman leader of the insurgents’ group and three children also surrendered to the troops at Kumshe in Bama Local Government Area of Borno.

He added that the insurgents voluntarily surrendered, noting that the move was acceptable under the Safe Corridor Scheme initiated by Federal Government to encourage the insurgents to lay down their arms.

The theatre commander explained that the military initiated contact with the insurgents to encourage them to surrender, adding that more insurgents had indicated their interest to lay down their arms.

He said “we had a contact group and two insurgents’ commanders, a local doctor and their women leader and their children surrendered to the troops.

“We gave them clothes, food and medication and assured them of safety: we are not killing anybody.

“Our duty is to protect lives and property, we call on the insurgents in the bush to come out, surrender and join the peace building process.”

He pointed out that the surrendered insurgents would be engaged in deradicalisation, rehabilitation and skill acquisition training programme for possible integration into the society.

In their submission, Ali Musa, the insurgents’ physician, said he conducted surgical operations such as bullet extraction, appendix, treatment of wounded insurgents, ante natal and post-natal services in the camp.

Ali said he was indoctrinated and misled by the sect leaders, adding that the sect activities had damaged his life.

Umar Ibrahim, one of the insurgents’ commanders, said he surrendered voluntarily as he became fed up with the group’s inhuman activities.

Ibrahim disclosed that hundreds of insurgents were willing to surrender to the troops but their leaders prevented them from doing so.

“We were told that the army will kill us and feed on our flesh when we surrender.

“The sect’s leaders also planted landmines to stop us from coming to the troops.

“Many insurgents are willing to surrender in view of the fact that we are against the destructive ideologies propagated by the sect.

“We hardly feed, people are starving due to the lack of food in the camp.

“We want peace and we want to join in building peace in our country, we ask Nigerians to forgive us.”

Ibrahim called on other insurgents to surrender and commended the military for taking care of them.

Former South African president Jacob Zuma, 76 set to take seventh wife, 24-year-old mother of his newborn child

Three independent sources confirmed to News24 that Zuma came to visit his baby under strict security on Thursday night.
"They had to clear the maternity ward for other patients. Hospital staff made it clear that this was strictly confidential," a source with direct knowledge of the birth told News24.
Ray Zuma, who is related to the former president, confirmed to News24 that Zuma was going to wed a woman named Nonkanyiso Chonco.
When asked if Chonco was the same woman who had given birth to a baby earlier this month, Ray Zuma responded by saying: "So?"
"I can't see why you are interested. When he was still the president, you [the media] were terrorising him, and now you are all of a sudden interested in him."
When asked about the details of the wedding, he said he was not privy to the details.
"No date has been set yet. Both families must come together to decide on the date. We are still in the pre-nuptial phases of the process."
When News24 visited the hospital earlier in the week, an employee confirmed that Zuma had visited the facility.
"Yes he was here last week. I saw him with his security. I do not know why he came through."
But other sources confirmed the baby was Zuma's. Hospital staff were briefed to keep it a closely guarded secret and only told "this is JZ's child" and a "VIP delivery".
Hillcrest Private Hospital management declined to comment saying they would not divulge details of any patient.

China's Property Investment Fastest In Three Years But Sales Slow

China’s real estate investment posted its fastest year-to-date growth in three years and new construction accelerated in the first quarter, however, property sales slowed as borrowing costs rose and demand appeared to soften.

Property investment grew 10.4 percent in January-March from the same period a year earlier, compared with a 9.9 percent rise in the first two months, data from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) showed on Tuesday. This matched the year-to-date growth seen in the January-February 2015 period.

Real estate directly affects 40 other business sectors in China and is a major driver for the economy. But a boom since 2016 has raised bubble concerns and prompted a flurry of government measures to tame soaring home prices.

Chinese policymakers are seeking to engineer a soft landing without roiling the economy as a sharp decline in prices and investment would weigh on industrial activity and dampen consumer confidence.

The investment number mainly focuses on residential real estate but also includes commercial and office space.

For March alone, property investment grew a robust 10.8 percent from same period last year, according to Reuters calculations based on official data.

The solid property activity appeared to support broader growth in the first quarter. China’s economy grew 6.8 percent in the first quarter from a year earlier, slightly above expectations in a Reuters poll and unchanged from the previous quarter.

New construction starts measured by floor area, a gauge of developers’ confidence, were up 9.7 percent year-on-year in the first quarter, after slowing to 2.9 percent in January-February, NBS data showed.

Property investment is estimated to grow 5 percent in the full year of 2018 as tight supply and government policies that promote real estate in smaller cities are seen keeping the market relatively buoyant despite other cooling measures, a Reuters poll showed.

Investment growth is also likely to be further cushioned by a rush to build rental apartments as major Chinese developers respond to President Xi Jinping’s call for more rental supply to address people’s housing demand as affordability fades.

However, tightening measures are expected to be gradually extended to smaller cities seen at risk of overheating.

Property sales by floor area rose by 3.6 percent in January-March from a year ago, easing from a 4.1 percent gain in the first two months of the year, NBS data showed.

In March alone, property sales rose 3.2 percent, according to Reuters calculations based on NBS data.

Kenyan Woman Returns After Being Raped And Jailed In Saudi Arabia

A 27-year-old Kenyan woman has returned home after a one-year ordeal in a Saudi Arabian prison.

Levina Mapenzi Ngolo, who was jailed for allegedly engaging in illicit sex, returned home from Riyadh last Thursday night aboard an Ethiopian airliner.

In her arms was a two-year-old boy she says she conceived as a result of the rape.
Ngolo, who worked as a house help, said she was raped by an Indian migrant.

They were employed by the same person and stayed in the same flat. She said the man threatened her with a knife.

However, Ms Ngolo was charged, under Saudi Arabia’s law, with engaging in sex outside marriage and jailed. Her attacker is still serving his three-year jail term.

Ngolo said her legs were chained all the time she was in prison. She gave birth to her son in prison after a seven-month court battle.

She said she was handed back her passport at the airport, shortly before boarding the plane back to Kenya.

Ngolo, who spoke at her parents’ home in Frere Town in Mombasa, claimed her Indian attacker, a driver, raped her overnight in 2016.

“The driver took advantage of the absence of our employer to attack me. Our employer had gone to visit her children. He accosted me as I came out of the house,” said Ngolo.

While in prison, Ngolo said, inmates were often beaten but she was spared because of her pregnancy.

Ngolo’s sister, Esther Kaidza, said a Kenyan woman called in September 2016 to inform her that her sibling had been arrested.

“A woman who was speaking Arabic was the first one to call me but we were unable to communicate because of language barrier. Later, the Kenyan called me. She said Lavina was in custody for sleeping with a driver and becoming pregnant, contrary to the laws of that land,” Kaidza said.

Ngolo said she could not immediately report the incident to her employer for fear of the consequences.

But after some time, she started feeling sick. That is when her employer took her to hospital. She tested positive for pregnancy.

“It was my employer’s son who first expressed suspicions that I could be pregnant. After the truth came out, his mother suggested that I be quietly returned to Kenya. However, her son took me to a police station, where I was immediately arrested,” said Ngolo.

Her attacker was beaten up and taken to the police station. They were both charged with engaging in illicit sex.

Ngolo was sentenced to one year in jail because she did not consent to sex while the driver was jailed for three years. She said she was not allowed to attend clinic until she gave birth.

Her father, Ngolo Baya, 75, said he was happy to welcome his daughter and her baby back home.

"The entire family was shocked when we learnt of her arrest in a foreign country,” Baya said.
